Let’s face it, if the name Ferris Bueller is attached in any way, the chances are I’m there. So the moment I saw Jason Klamm’s book Ferris Bueller…You’re My Hero: The Story of the World’s Most Famous Day Off, which of course centers around the 1986 John Hughes classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, staring me in the face from the book shelf, I knew it had my name written all over it.
Starting off as part love letter to the film, part biography for legendary late writer/director John Hughes, the book takes readers on a journey not only from our titular characters’ (Matthew Broderick) bedroom, through each and every sight of Chicago all the way up to the infamous parade scene, no stone is left un-turned. Even the music, such as how The Beatles’ version of “Twist and Shout” that’s used in that much-loved parade moment ever came to be, is covered in great detail here.
Interviews with core cast members Broderick, Mia Sara, and Alan Ruck, as well as a host of other key cast and crew members (including Hughes’ son, James) help to shift the story along. One such interesting interviewee (just to give an example) comes in the form of “Gummy Bear Girl” (or, “Girl on Bus” as she’s originally credited) Polly Noonan (sometimes credited as Polly du Pont Noonan), who I never knew later went on to befriend the band The Lemonheads and even appeared in one of their music videos in the early ’90s.
It is indeed small facts like this that I’m forever on the hunt for, and books such as this one offer plenty to whet the appetite. And with the film itself having just turned forty years old now, this is a perfect way to celebrate and must read for fans, though the uninitiated might have a hard time trying to stay focused on much of the material. But if it’s your type of thing, relax and take a break Ferris-style, and give the book a spin around the block like a Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder.
