I don’t know what it is about the loveable fat cat himself Garfield that Hollywood just can’t seem to get right; the two live action films that Bill Murrary voiced in the 2000’s were nothing short of atrocious, and this latest CGI incarnation had potential, yet somehow still missed the mark on more than one account.
Obviously geared more towards smaller children this time (who no doubt will love it more than parents), it strays far too much from the source material, taking far too many liberties along the way in the process. Chris Pratt does not “scream” Garfield at all, and is an unfortunate missed opportunity. And while Sameul L. Jackson does his best as Garfield’s father, Vic, ultimately he’s just one of many more new characters that no one asked for.
The scenes we see of Garfield as a kitten are adorable, and pretty much the only redeeming qualities of The Garfield Movie. Had it stuck with more of an origin story, and included other favorites like Arlene and Nermal rather than try to become the over-the-top action adventure that it does, there may have actually been some hope here. But I’ve seen better straight-to-DVD Garfield rides than this one.
